A Sociomedical Study on Oksu-Dong in Koje Area


Abstract
For the purpose of preservation and promotion of their health, a socio medical
study was performed on the residents at newly-formed Oksu-Dong, Jangsungpo
Eup, Koje-Gun due to industrialization from March, 1975 to February, 1976. The obtained results were as follows:
1) General characteristics.
By. the age group, the peak was distributed in 5-9 years old group as 326 (14.0%) and 55-59 years old group was the lowest as 60 (2.6%). ,
Non-productive age group was 36.5% of the total residents and the average size of household was 6.0 persons.

From 15 years-old to 49 years old, the illiteracy rate was relative low, but there was tendency toward the high rate after 50 years old.
The unemployed group and agricultural group were 36.5% and 19.8% respec¡þtively.
The rates of married person were 67.7% in male and 79.7% in female after 20 years old.
12.4% of inhabitants were believed in Christianity, 12. 10 believed in Buddhism and 0.8% believed in Catholic.
84.8% of the total residents had his own house and sources of drinking water were, depended on two simple waterworks.
2) Public health problems.
The age distribution of eligible women showed that under 19 years, old group was 23.5%, 2024 years old¢¥ group 19.7%, and 25~29 years old group 15.2%
that order.
89.4% of deliveries were conducted at home and 10. 6% were at hospital.
Attendants at last delivery¢¥ were laymen as 64. 9% and professional persons as 19.8%.
The rate of under I year old infants was 29.2 per 1, 000 persons and the vaccination rate for children aged 0-5 years old with B.C.G. was 31.4%, small pox 24.0%, D.P.T. (complete 3 injections) 10. 3% and polio (complete 3 times) 6.2%.
The respondents who viewed 3 children (2 sons & I daughter) as "ideal" was 59.5% and 4 children (3 sons & I daughter)-\ was 10¢¥.3%.
22.6% of the total respondents replied that they had knowledge of family planning and 78. 1% of the total respondents were favorable toward family planning.
Current practice rate of contraception was 32.7% and most high frequency of the contraceptive methods were presented oral pill (36..8%) and loop (26.9%).
The prevalence rate of parasite showed that Trichocephalus trichiurus (71.5%), Ascaris lumbricoides (71.2%), and Taenia saginata and solium (1.1%). 3) Medical care problems.
Incidence rate of medical care problems during a month was 21.3%.
The rate of health problems by the age group was the highest in the 50-59 years old group as 44.4% and the lowest was 10-14 years lod group as 8.7%.
The health problems reported most frequently in interviews during a month were respiratory disease (4.2%), digestive tract disease (3.7%), and skin & mucocutaneous disease (2.3%) in that order.
The most frequent diseases by the age group were as follows: 0- 9 years old group respiratory disease
10-14 years old group digestive tract disease
15-19 years old group skin & mucocutaneous disease
20-29 years old group genitourinary tract disease
30-39 yrs old group digestive tract disease
40-49 years old group neuromuscular and digestive tract disease 50-59 years old group digestive tract disease
60 years old and more neuromuscular disease
The rate of treatment by various medical facilities for all health problems
during a month was 60.2% and the types of used medical facilities were as follows: hospital & clinic (46.2%), drug store (29.6%), herbal drug store (11.6%), health center (7.2%) and others (5.4%).
The health problems those were most frequently occurred and treated during a year were dental problems (213 persons), ill-defined diseases ¢¥(132 persons) respiratory diseases (I09 persons) in that order and the rate of used medical facilities was 29.5%.
The expenditure for health and sanitation was amounted to 8.3% of average monthly living expenditure per household and by the items, 29. 2% to drugstore

over the total respondents, 28.4% to bathing and haircut, 25.2 to hospital anti clinic, and 12.1% to herbal drug store in that order. 4) Socioeconomic problems
Total increased households during a year were 30, 15 households in emigration and 45 households in immigration.
The average monthly living expenditure per household was amounted to 43,207
won, and detailed items were as follows: food (46.5%), education (10.7%), housing (9.4%), and health and sanitation (8.3%) in that order.
56.5%. of the respondents replied that they think living? standard, is getting
worse than before the immigration, but 60.8% of the respondents intended to stay at the present place.
69.6% of the total households showed favorable to the medical insurance system and the proportion of households intended to save over 200 won per capita for medical insurance was 22.7%.
